Is this from Tsumihoroboshi-hen? They mention Rena a lot.
And this video only makes me want the game translated to US even more. D;

No, it's not.
Sound novel = Emphasis on the overall ambient through focus on the music and sound effects, other than the story itself. Add the voice acting in the latter versions/PS2 remake.
Visual novel = Emphasis on the story, and the graphics.
The main difference is the simplistic graphics used in the Higurashi games (PS2 remakes aside), rather than elaborate sprites. The line between a sound novel and a visual novel is pretty null, but the distinction is there for a reason.

I found Daybreak more like School Rumble... Only with more plot...
Hinamo623 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Pretty much. Also Daybreak was a sound novel too, just that the major parts of the story were told in the arena game.
(Wow, only a week from replying? The world goes too slow for me)
Kirinet (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
So basically it's not really a game, but more like a story?
Hinamo623 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
That's what you do. It's a SOUND NOVEL. While it's not much more than a gray area for those who can't publish books themselves or make fully animated versions of four different storylines, it is a highly played "genre" in Japan.
Tsukihime, ToHeart, and Da Capo were originally adult visual novels or eroges.

Er... what exactly do you DO in Higurashi games (other than Daybreak) Because I only see people talking to each other. T.T |
